Festspielhaus Baden-Baden

A Festival of Possibilities

The Festspielhaus Baden-Baden

In the beginning there was an idea - surely it must be possible to establish a top-class opera house in Germany, financed only by donations and supported by the commitment of its audience. The 15-year success story that began with this idea has now led to the introduction of the Easter Festival with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, complementing the four existing festival periods each centred around an opera.

Five festivals, in addition to an annual programme of constantly high festival standard, and all financed privately - what is the secret of this success? One third of the budget required for running the Festspielhaus is contributed by donors, founders and sponsors. This alliance between the opera house and its audience best explains the "Festspielhaus phenomenon". Everyone gives what they can spare. Even the smallest contribution is important and flows completely into the development of the programme and the work with children and youths.

These financial contributions provide us with considerable independence and the necessary assurance required to plan the large and elaborate productions that distinguish the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, whilst simultaneously allowing us to cater to the individual needs of our audience and artists. This is fully recognised and appreciated by international stars who also enjoy the unique rehearsal conditions - as well as sensational acoustics with which they can risk even the softest of pianissimos. Many stars have become friends over time and regularly make guest appearances on our stage in opera, concert and ballet performances. Speaking of friends, frequently we hear audience members referring to the Festspielhaus foyer as their “second living room”. Some guests travel from Hamburg, Munich and surrounds on a regular basis, and many bring along family and friends, often organising birthdays and celebrations around the musical performances.
